Expo 2020 collaborates with GSES System to host the most sustainable World Expo in history
Expo 2020 Dubai partnered with Dutch company Global Sustainable Enterprise System (GSES) to establish what organisers describe as the most sustainable World Expo in history — with a focus on measuring and reporting sustainability performance across key stakeholders.
GSES developed a specialised software platform that generates comprehensive sustainability rating cards based on independent audits. The platform evaluates both suppliers and Country Pavilions participating in the event, creating transparency across the full supply chain.
Making supply chain sustainability measurable
Kelly Ruigrok, GSES CEO: "Without an all-in-one system to manage sustainability performance, it becomes nearly impossible to ensure that your supply chain and event is sustainable."
The software platform automates data collection from Expo 2020 suppliers, Country Pavilions, and partners regarding their sustainability performance. It was developed based on the RISE Guidelines — the region's first sustainability framework of its kind — created specifically by Expo 2020.
A model for sustainable events
Dina Storey, Director of Sustainability Operations at Expo 2020 Dubai: "Our collaboration with GSES System is emblematic of these efforts — working together to host one of the most sustainable World Expos in history."
The Netherlands Pavilion participated under the theme "Uniting Water, Energy, Food", contributing to awareness and international cooperation on Sustainable Development Goals.
Lody Embrechts, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the UAE: "The Netherlands Pavilion's theme contributes to more awareness and international cooperation in achieving some of the Sustainable Development Goals."
Origins of the collaboration
The collaboration originated from a trade mission on innovation during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, organised by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. GSES became an official Expo 2020 supplier in 2020 — bringing Dutch sustainability expertise to one of the world's largest international events.
